Shadow Creation Services for Product Photography

Professional drop, natural and reflection shadow services from $0.50 an image. A cut-out product floats until you put it back on a surface, and that shadow has to agree with the light it was shot in. Pixel Retouching has built shadows by hand since 2014, from ISO-certified studios in Singapore and Dhaka.

The technique

What Is Shadow Creation?

Shadow creation rebuilds the shadow a product would cast if it were really sitting on the surface behind it — after the original background has been removed. Pixel Retouching provides shadow creation finished by hand in Photoshop, with a named retoucher on every batch.

It grounds the product

Without a shadow a cut-out hovers. The shadow is what tells the eye the object has weight and is resting on something.

It has to match the light

A shadow falling the wrong way, or too hard for the lighting in the frame, looks more wrong than no shadow at all.

Built, not filtered

A Photoshop drop-shadow layer style is a giveaway. We build the shape from the product outline and the original lighting.

Held across the catalogue

Depth, direction and opacity are set once and repeated, so a category page does not flicker between styles.

How it works

How Our Shadow Creation Service Works

Four steps from a cut-out product to a grounded, listing-ready image.

Step 01

Send your files

Cut-outs or original frames, by portal, FTP, Drive or WeTransfer. Tell us the shadow style you want.

Step 02

Read the light

We take the direction, softness and intensity from the original photograph rather than guessing.

Step 03

Build the shadow

Shaped from the product outline, built in layers and blended so it sits under the object rather than behind it.

Step 04

Delivery

Files return within 24 hours in the formats you need. Revisions are unlimited.

What we build

Our Shadow Creation Services

The right shadow depends on the product, the surface and where the image will be used. Drag any slider to compare.

Drop Shadow

The everyday marketplace shadow. A soft shape offset beneath the product, giving it weight on a white background without drawing attention to itself.

  • Direction and softness matched to the original light
  • Subtle enough for a marketplace listing
  • Even opacity across the whole batch
  • From $0.50 an image

Natural Shadow

The shadow the product actually cast, rebuilt or restored. Used when the original has been lost with the background but the realism needs to survive.

  • Shaped from the product, not a generic blur
  • Contact point kept dark, falloff kept soft
  • Reads as photography rather than as an effect
  • From $0.50 an image

Reflection & Mirror Shadow

A mirrored copy fading beneath the product, as if it were standing on glass or polished stone. Standard for electronics, cosmetics, footwear and jewellery.

  • Perspective-correct mirrored copy
  • Gradient falloff tuned per product
  • Works on white and on colour
  • From $0.50 an image

Floating & Cast Shadow

A shadow thrown onto the surface below and behind a suspended product, used for apparel on an invisible hanger and for hero and campaign shots.

  • Cast direction set to the campaign lighting
  • Distance and blur imply height above the surface
  • Pairs with ghost mannequin work
  • Suits hero and banner images

Shadow on a Clipped Product

Most shadow work follows a cut-out. We draw the path, clear the background and build the shadow in one pass so the edge and the shadow agree.

  • Path, background and shadow in one edit
  • No halo between product and shadow
  • Marketplace-compliant white retained
  • See our clipping path service

Catalogue Shadow Consistency

One shadow specification applied across an entire range, so a category page reads as a single shoot rather than a collection of separate edits.

  • One spec written once and repeated
  • Direction and depth identical across SKUs
  • Agreed naming and FTP delivery
  • Up to 50% off on high volume

Product types

Shadow Creation for Every Category

Surface and material decide which shadow reads as real.

Apparel

Soft contact shadow for flat-lay, cast shadow for hanging and ghost mannequin shots.

Footwear

Reflection beneath the sole, with a darker contact point where the shoe meets the surface.

Jewellery

Fine, tight shadows that ground a small piece without swamping it.

Electronics

Mirror reflection is the category convention, and buyers expect it.

Cosmetics & bottles

Reflection under glass, with the shadow shaped to the curve of the container.

Furniture

Weight matters — a heavy piece needs a shadow that says so.

Bags & accessories

Contact shadow under the base, softer falloff around straps and handles.

Packaged goods

Clean box shadows that keep pack faces legible at thumbnail size.

Why it matters

Why a Product Without a Shadow Looks Fake

The shadow is small, and it is the difference between a photograph and a paste-up.

Floating products lose trust

A cut-out with no shadow reads as clip art. Shoppers rarely name the problem, but they register that the image has been manipulated and the product feels less real.

A filter shadow is obvious

A default drop-shadow layer style casts the same soft ellipse regardless of the object. Against a product with an irregular base it fools nobody.

Direction has to match

If the highlight on the product comes from the left and the shadow falls left as well, the eye catches it immediately even if the viewer cannot say why.

Inconsistency breaks the grid

Some products with reflections, some with drop shadows and some with none makes a category page look assembled rather than designed.

Our workflow

Our Shadow Creation Workflow

The same four stages run on a three-image trial and a four-thousand-image catalogue.

  1. 01

    Read the original

Direction, softness and intensity are taken from the light in the source photograph.

  2. 02

    Shape the shadow

Built from the product outline so it follows the real base, not a generic ellipse.

  3. 03

    Blend and check

Contact point darkened, falloff softened, opacity checked against the rest of the batch.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Flattened output plus a layered file on request, in the sizes you asked for.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is shadow creation in photo editing?

It is the rebuilding of the shadow a product would cast on the surface it is sitting on, usually after the original background has been removed. Without it, a cut-out product appears to float, which reads as artificial even to shoppers who cannot articulate why.

What is the difference between a drop shadow and a natural shadow?

A drop shadow is a soft, offset shape placed beneath the product — clean, neutral and ideal for marketplace listings. A natural shadow reconstructs the shadow the product genuinely cast, following its real base and the original lighting, which suits lifestyle and campaign imagery.

What is a reflection shadow?

A mirrored copy of the product fading away beneath it, as though it were standing on glass or polished stone. It is the convention for electronics, cosmetics, footwear and jewellery, and buyers in those categories expect it.

Can you add a shadow to an image that already has a white background?

Yes. If the product is already cut out we build the shadow directly. If the original background is still there we remove it first — see our background removal service — then ground the product in the same pass.

Why not just use the Photoshop drop-shadow layer style?

Because it applies the same soft ellipse to every object regardless of shape. On a product with an irregular base, or one photographed under directional light, the mismatch between the object and its shadow is immediately visible.

How much does shadow creation cost?

Drop, natural and reflection shadows start at $0.50 an image. The full eCommerce-ready edit — clipping path, background removal and shadow together — starts at $1.50. Complex cast shadows are quoted against your files.

Can you keep the shadow consistent across a whole catalogue?

Yes, and that is usually the point. Direction, depth and opacity are written into a spec once and repeated across every SKU, so a category page reads as one shoot rather than a series of separate edits.

How fast is the turnaround?

Standard turnaround is 24 hours. Bulk catalogue work runs to an agreed staged schedule, and rush delivery is available for an additional fee. Revisions are unlimited.
